The North East region runs from the Scottish border south through Northumberland's largely unspoilt Heritage Coast, past the Tyne and Wear conurbation, County Durham's dramatic coastal cliffs, and into North Yorkshire and the East Riding. Environment Agency designated bathing waters here include some of the most scenic and least-crowded beaches in England — Northumberland in particular is frequently cited for outstanding water quality and spectacular coastal scenery. Selection follows the EA's official designation list; every site is tested regularly during the bathing season. Sea temperatures typically reach 15–18°C in peak summer, and exposed locations can experience strong northerly winds. Bathing season runs 15 May to 30 September. The majority of North East sites hold Good or Excellent ratings; sustained infrastructure investment has significantly improved quality at sites near the region's larger towns over the past decade.
