Wales's bathing waters are monitored by Natural Resources Wales (NRW), applying the same EU-derived Bathing Water Directive standards as the Environment Agency in England. The Welsh coastline spans some of the highest-rated bathing waters in the UK: Pembrokeshire's exposed Atlantic headlands, the Gower Peninsula's wide sandy bays, Anglesey's sheltered coves, Cardigan Bay's long sandy beaches, and the beaches of North Wales. Every site listed here is formally designated by NRW for routine water quality sampling. Bathing season officially runs 15 May to 30 September. Wales consistently achieves a high proportion of Excellent-rated sites; the western and northern coasts in particular benefit from clean Atlantic water and relatively low pressures on catchment rivers. NRW publishes short-term pollution risk predictions alongside annual classifications — check these before swimming, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall.
