About Blue Flag Awarded Beaches

The international Blue Flag award is a globally recognized eco-label awarded to beaches meeting strict criteria for water quality, environmental management, safety services, and public education.

Run in the UK by Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, and Keep Wales Tidy, the Blue Flag scheme assesses beaches against roughly 30 criteria spanning four categories: water quality, safety and services, environmental education and information, and environmental management. To qualify, a beach must achieve 'Excellent' bathing water status under the strictest tier of the Bathing Water Regulations — 'Sufficient' or 'Good' ratings are not enough — alongside requirements for lifeguard provision, first aid facilities, accessible information boards, and litter and dog control policies. Flags are awarded annually and re-assessed each year, so a beach must maintain its standards season after season rather than earning the accolade once and keeping it indefinitely.

Because the standard is so demanding, Blue Flag beaches represent a relatively small, carefully vetted subset of the UK coastline rather than a broad category. Well-known holders include Woolacombe and Blackpool Sands in Devon, St Ives and Carbis Bay in Cornwall, and Tenby's North and South beaches in Pembrokeshire, alongside a growing number of Scottish beaches meeting the scheme's environmental management criteria. Flags are typically flown from May to September, aligning with the core bathing season, and many award-holding beaches also carry RNLI lifeguard cover across the same period — making the summer months the most reliable time to experience the full standard the award represents.

Water quality sits at the heart of the Blue Flag standard, and for good reason: it's the criterion with the most direct impact on swimmer health. 'Excellent' classification requires E. coli and intestinal enterococci counts consistently below 250 and 100 colony-forming units per 100ml, figures associated with low risk of gastrointestinal and skin infections. SwimSafe UK tracks Blue Flag status alongside live Short Term Pollution (STP) warnings, so you can see not just whether a beach holds the award, but whether recent rainfall or storm overflow activity might have temporarily affected conditions on the day you plan to visit.
