About Top Beaches in Wales

Wales boasts world-class coastline including the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the Gower Peninsula (the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), and the Isle of Anglesey. Bathing waters are monitored by Natural Resources Wales.

Each of these three regions offers a distinct flavour of Welsh coastline. Pembrokeshire's dramatic cliffs and hidden coves — Barafundle Bay, Broad Haven, Whitesands — sit within one of the UK's few entirely coastal national parks, offering some of the clearest water in Wales alongside excellent walking access via the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. The Gower Peninsula packs an outsized variety into a small area, from the vast sweep of Rhossili Bay, regularly ranked among the best beaches in Britain, to sheltered family coves like Caswell and Langland. Anglesey, in the north, offers a quieter, more remote character, with beaches like Llanddwyn and Cemaes backed by dune systems and views across to Snowdonia, drawing far fewer visitors than the southern coastlines despite comparable water quality.

Wales's beaches see their sharpest seasonal swings around school holidays, particularly across Pembrokeshire and the Gower, where car parks at well-known beaches fill early on summer weekends. Visiting in late May or September brings noticeably quieter beaches and often calmer seas, while many of the smaller, less signposted coves — reached via coastal paths rather than direct road access — stay peaceful even during the busiest weeks of August. RNLI lifeguard cover typically runs from late May to early September at the larger, more popular beaches across all three regions.

Water quality across Wales is monitored by Natural Resources Wales, using the same Bathing Water Regulations thresholds applied across the UK: 'Excellent'-rated beaches maintain E. coli and intestinal enterococci counts below 250 and 100 colony-forming units per 100ml, marking them as low-risk for swimmers and paddlers. SwimSafe UK layers live Short Term Pollution (STP) warnings across Pembrokeshire, the Gower, and Anglesey alike, so you can check the morning of your visit whether recent rainfall has temporarily affected conditions at your chosen beach before you set off.
